Overview

In Hōkai, only one person can be designated the Principal Investigator (PI), and only that person can submit the ethics application.

Every other person involved in the research should be added to the application with other roles.

The instructions for adding researchers and supervisors with the correct roles are embedded in the application form.

A student researcher under your supervision should click on the PhD, Masters, or Honours option in Question 6 of the form. When they do, specific instructions appear about adding their Supervisor:

When a student adds you to an application, you will receive an email notification. You can track all applications you are associated with on the Hōkai Applications page.

Masters and Honours students

Masters and Honours students add their Supervisor as the Principal Investigator on their application.

When a student has two or more Supervisors, the student and Supervisors should decide which Supervisor will act as the PI and submit the application.

The system requires the student to add one Principal Investigator. If they do not, an error message appears in red.

The system grants the PI Supervisor Access Rights to Edit the application by default. The Supervisor / Principal Investigator submits the application when it is ready to go to the Ethics team for review.

If the student has a secondary Supervisor, the student should add them as an Associate Investigator to the application. The system will grant the secondary Supervisor Access Rights to View by default.

PhD students

PhD students act as the Principal Investigator for their application, and add their supervisor(s) under the Supervisor (for PhD Principal Investigator) role.

The system requires a PhD student to add at least one Supervisor. If they do not, an error message appears in red.

The system grants the Supervisor(s) Access Rights to View the application by default. PhD students are responsible for making sure their supervisor(s) review the application before it is submitted.

Download a draft application

You may prefer to review the student's draft application as a document. The Preview button always appears in the top right corner of an application.

It will download a zip folder containing a PDF and Word version of the application, as well as all supporting documents.
